Spring 2013 we purchased four young pigs raised on a farm about an hour from here. These were a heritage breed---specifically Tamworth mix---known for producing rich and tasty pork. Our pigs were first brought to the barn where the cows had wintered over wood chips (fresh wood chip bedding was brought in every few days). We interspersed corn in this bedding and over the winter months, they fermented. When our pigs were placed in the barn, they rooted wildly for this corn, at the same time, producing rich compost with all their churning of the wood chips and cow manure. We put this compost onto the pasture, saving us a great deal of money on fertilizer. The pigs were then put out on very large fenced pasture/woods for the rest of their days until slaughter. We have done this again in 2014. In 2015 we found a terrific breeder who raised their piglets on sprouted feeds. We now source our Tamworth piglets from this farm. We don't always have pigs--only occasionally when the time is right. Beef, eggs, and honey are our main products.

Because of the amount of hands-on care, high quality feed (no GMO, all-natural) given to the animals, and use of a humane local abattoir (butcher), the cost of producing a pasture-based product is significantly higher than that of mass-produced, government-subsidized farm product. The food produced here is far healthier than almost anything you can find in the store. We believe that if you consistently eat healthy of the higher quality food, you will have lower medical bills. With all that said, we don't apologize for these prices. As the old adage says, you get what you pay for. These are happy pigs to the end, and the tasty, rich meat reflects that.
